South Carolina Takes Mildred Southern Cup
In the first year of The Callen Cup – named in honor of the late USTA Southern Executive Director & COO John Callen – South Carolina was the big winner.
The competition was played at the Pelham (Ala.) Racquet Club, under the supervision of Tournament Director Tom Burnham. All matches were on clay and ran from May 31 to June 5. A big thank you goes out Pelham for hosting another terrific event and the tournament staff who made all the fabulous tennis played possible.
The Palmetto State captured 67 points in the combined 10-level competition and earned the Mildred Southern Cup. Second place went to Alabama with 62 points. The margin for third place was razon-thin with Georgia having 53 points while Tennessee barely edged North Carolina, with 51 and 50.25 points respectively.
